WLA holds a chapter membership in the American Library Association (ALA) and an association membership in the Mountain Plains Library Association (MPLA). A councilor to represent WLA in the American Library Association is elected in accordance with ALA bylaws by all voting members of WLA. The ALA Councilor also serves as WLA's Intellectual Freedom Advisor. The ALA Councilor serves for three years, beginning at the conclusion of the ALA annual conference that follows WLA's election for the office. If a vacancy occurs, the WLA Executive Board may appoint a qualified person to fill the position until the next WLA general election.A representative to MPLA is elected in accordance with MPLA bylaws by all voting members of WLA. The MPLA Representative serves for three years, beginning at the conclusion of the WLA meeting that follows the election for the office. If a vacancy occurs, the WLA Executive Board may appoint a qualified person to fill the position until the next WLA general election. The ALA Councilor and MPLA Representative act as liaisons, interpreting the wishes and policies of WLA to these organizations, and interpreting the wishes and policies of these organizations to WLA. They make all WLA members aware of critical issues as they arise so that members may respond in a timely manner. In addition, each representative submits a written report to WLA members at the annual official business meeting. |
