AACR2 Cataloging Basics
http://www.bcr.org/training/schedule/programdetail.php?programid=139

Description:
This intensive two-day workshop (which replaces the BCR workshops
Cataloging: AACR2 Description and Cataloging: AACR2 Access Points)
concentrates on the basic, essential rules of current cataloging
practice - describing library resources and providing access points to
bibliographic records.

Focusing on the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition
(AACR2), the workshop covers Chapters 1 and 2 on describing books, from
the title through the notes. We'll also look at Chapters 21 through 24,
on creating access points in records for authors, illustrators,
composers, organizations and titles, to improve search results in your
catalog.

You'll see lots of examples and have a chance to practice what you learn
with several exercises throughout both days.

The workshop includes, but does not emphasize MARC tagging.

Whether you do original cataloging, copy cataloging or no cataloging
whatsoever, you'll learn the concepts used to prepare bibliographic
records for your library catalog, knowledge every librarian needs to
effectively find resources in the catalog and assist patrons to do the
same. After taking the class, you'll be able to catalog with greater
skill having learned:

* What to do when no title page exists.
* How to record the place of publication when many places are listed on
the title page.
* How to record a date of publication when many dates appear in the
item.
* What the terms "main entry" and "added entry" mean and how to decide
upon them for each cataloged item.
* How to construct correct headings for people, organizations and
places.
* What the main entry should be for a work that is a collaborative
effort, even when a spirit has communicated the content of an item to be
cataloged.
* How to handle pseudonyms and name changes for authors.
* What to do when a place which changes its name, such as Leningrad,
Czechoslovakia, East Germany.
* How to use the Library of Congress Rule Interpretations (LCRIs) to aid
you in applying the rules.

Participants do not need to bring AACR2 with them.
