Final Announcement!
Cataloging Earth Science Data: Standards and Tools You Can Use!
Description
What do you do when Professor Smith asks the library to preserve and
make available his digital research data? How will you retrieve these
data when Professor Smith's students request access to his data years
later? How will the worldwide research community find and access these
data?
There are increasing calls for the library community to manage digital
science data. In this class we will specifically discuss cataloging
earth science data. What are the differences between traditional library
catalog records and digital science data catalog records? What are the
differences between earth science data and other kinds of science data?
How do you describe earth science data so that reference librarians
inside and outside your institution can locate data for their users?
What currently available tools allow you to locate existing data
records? Come to this workshop for the answers to these questions and
many more.
This one-day workshop introduces librarians to:
* Metadata standards in use for cataloging earth science data,
including NASA's DIF, the FGDC CSGDM and ISO 19115 standards
* Search tools such as the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD),
Geospatial One-Stop (GOS) and more
* Metadata authoring for earth science data
Participants in the workshop will:
* Understand the suite of standards, the differences between them
and which is most appropriate for their situation
* Learn what it takes to create their own metadata records for
submission to the GCMD
* Understand what steps need to be taken to create earth science
metadata records within their existing library catalog systems
* Using the standards discussed in class, students will work in
teams to create a metadata catalog record using a cryospheric data set
Who Should Attend
Library staff who want clarity regarding metadata standards, and who
want to learn what all these acronyms mean and which standards and tools
are best for your collections.
