Earlier this year the Idaho Commission for Libraries contracted with a 3rd party organization to conduct focus groups with individuals that can be identified as "digital natives." Specifically, focus groups were conducted with groups of individuals ages 12-17 and ages 18-25. The members of the focus groups were asked to share their perceptions of libraries in Idaho. The results of that research can be found in the report, Perceptions of Idaho's Digital Natives on Public Libraries http://libraries.idaho.gov/files/default/2007-digital-native-rpt.pdf . The report is now available in PDF format for download from the Commission's website (http://libraries.idaho.gov ).
The report, funded with LSTA funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, highlights 18 key findings that were found across both age groups studied. It further identifies themes that were more specific to the two different age groups studied, and it includes detailed findings with quotes from the focus group participants. The Commission is using the information to help libraries design valid/useful/viable (pick one) services for their digital audiences.
